MESA influences by building the intellectual credibility and public reach that puts next gen policy thinking into circulation. It activates by placing policy experts directly inside emerging market governments, closing the gap between research production and policy uptake in the places that need it most. And it innovates by funding and connecting local youth innovators with the capital and networks to turn policy ideas into civic action.

Through the research, commentary, and platforms we produce, MESA aims to build the intellectual credibility and public reach that puts next-generation policy thinking into circulation. The institute builds influence through three primary activities: Policy, Voices, and Forums. Our flagship program is the MESA Fellowship Programme, a three-month program in which practitioners and experts in their respective fields develop original, publication-ready work on the issues shaping tomorrow’s policy landscape. The program is designed to build an expansive alumni network and a strong cohort of young professionals and academics with a shared commitment to policy-driven change.
MESA Voices extends this work through narrative-based storytelling, with the Newsroom, MESA Perspectives, and Podcast providing vehicles for the institute to platform ongoing discourse and perspectives that might otherwise go unheard. Our Policy Forums bring together scholars, practitioners, and contributors through closed-door Roundtables, where participants test arguments and pressure-test the thinking behind MESA’s published briefs, and smaller Pillar Receptions tied to each of MESA’s four policy pillars. Together, these platforms create a direct, recurring channel between MESA’s research, ideas, and the policymaking community.

This work is delivered through NEXUS (Network for Evidence, Exchange and Unlocking Systems), MESA’s regional policy fellowship model. Launched in Africa and designed to extend to the Pacific and Latin America as MESA’s footprint grows, NEXUS builds a self-reinforcing regional research and leadership pipeline that outlasts any single Fellow’s term.
NEXUS Africa embeds six postdoctoral Fellows inside partner ministries across Sierra Leone, Togo, Senegal, Chad, and Nigeria. Each Fellow serves a dual mandate as a technical policy advisor and interlocutor, bridging government, civil society, universities, and international partners while working across priority areas including macroeconomic stability, climate transition, youth employment, and digital transformation. Fellows are paired with local researchers through a university prize competition and an annual leadership forum, ensuring that the resulting policy work is built for governments and their institutional needs rather than adapted downward from research designed elsewhere.
